Phu Quoc’s reefs are facing an unprecedented challenge. Historical bleaching events hit local waters with average coral bleaching ratios as high as 28.2%—significantly worse than neighboring coastal regions. Recent severe marine heatwaves wiped out up to 90% of the coral cover in critical spots like the Coral Jungle Reef, while coastal runoff continues to smother vital slow-growing species like Pavona and centuries-old Diploastrea.

Restoring these fragile ecosystems isn't just about saving coral underwater—it’s about changing how we interact with the ocean on land and in the water.

At GuardianBLU, we are tackling this crisis through a two-front approach: cutting-edge ex-situ coral restoration and direct community education for local fishing families. But to finish what we’ve started, we need your help today.

Pillar 1: Finishing Our Ex-Situ Coral Nursery

To safeguard vulnerable marine life against rising ocean temperatures, we are building a specialized ex-situ coral nursery on the Phu Quoc sea wall.

• The Setup: An 8-unit tidal flow-through system designed to harbor rescued fragments of fast-growing species (Acropora hyacinthus) and ancient reef-builders (Diploastrea heliopora).

• The Controlled Environment: This facility serves as a "living gene bank," giving rescued coral fragments 5 months of protected conditions, controlled tidal flow, and zero thermal stress before re-implantation.

• Where We Stand: The physical anchoring and initial plumbing phase are underway, but funding is urgently needed to finalize system plumbing, tidal pumps, water-quality testing kits, and complete the critical biological cycling phase.

Pillar 2: Education & Local Translator Outreach

You cannot protect a reef without partnering with the people who live alongside it. For generations, local fishing communities in Phu Quoc have relied on destructive fishing practices—not out of malice, but because it is the only livelihood they have ever known.

To break this cycle, we need to plant seeds of change, but meaningful change requires real communication.

• Local Translators & Field Educators: We are hiring local translators and community liaisons who speak the local dialect, understand traditional customs, and can build trusted relationships with local fishermen.

• Empowerment Through Knowledge: Rather than pointing fingers, our field programs teach sustainable fishing practices, demonstrate how healthy coral directly supports fish stocks, and offer viable alternative practices.
